The Walk, organised by theatre company Good Chance, brought together artists, theatres, community groups and humanitarian groups with the aim of creating one of the most innovative and adventurous public artworks ever attempted.

At the heart of The Walk is Little Amal, created by Handspring, the company which created the equine puppets in the hit show ‘Warhorse’.

She arrived in Sheffield on Friday 29 October 2021 on the penultimate stop of a journey that began on the Syria-Turkey border and ended in Manchester.

The 8,000km journey represents the stark reality faced by all children forced to leave their homes and their families and aims to ensure the world doesn’t forget them at a time when they are more vulnerable than ever during the global pandemic.

She was welcomed by performances and activities from Stand and Be Counted Theatre Company, DINA, Sheffield Hallam University, and a wide range of other artists and community groups.

This Dr Tom Payne’s special animation of Andrew Motion’s iconic poem ‘What If?’ was projected on the side of the town hall as part of the finale to the event. Motion's iconic poem was presented with kind permission from Off the Shelf Festival of Words.
